The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) provides a fast and efficient way of calling for assistance at sea, whatever the size of craft or its geographical position. Since it was first published, this book has helped explain the system for anyone using GMDSS and has been excellent pre-course reading for students.

Elan 350 is European Yacht of the Year

Elan350Elan's new 350 performance yacht has been awarded the coveted title of European Yacht of the Year 2010 / 2011 in the performance cruisers category. The announcement was made at the Boot Boat Show in Dusseldorf and confirms Elan's decision to introduce the 350 as an exciting boat, bringing a totally new concept to models in this size range.

The Elan 350 is the first 35ft sailing yacht with twin wheel / twin rudder configuration offering excellent steering precision and easy handling in all weather conditions.

The twin wheel layout replicates the ergonomic arrangement previously only thought possible in a 40ft plus yacht, giving the same steering qualities and course integrity as the 310.

The yacht builds on the special characteristics of the 310, but in a size of boat that is ever popular - small enough to be managed by a husband and wife team but large enough to have real sea-going capability and an exceptional turn of speed for a 35ft boat, in part due to her lighter weight ratio and greater wetted surface area.

The 350 is very much in tune with the time – namely more speed for less effort.

Designed by Rob Humphreys, Elan yachts are the dream of many sailors, evoking pride of ownership with their attractive, sleek lines and on-water performance.

With unrivalled cruising accommodation, including a spacious aft cabin, generous heads and an expansive aft stowage locker that will be the envy of many, the 350 will undoubtedly appeal to those wanting fun and exhilarating short-handed sailing, fabulous cruising and the ultimate in user-friendliness.

Radical but still true to her roots, the new 350 is an affirmation of the design choices taken with the 310 – increased sail-carrying power, broad stern for increased stability and power and powerful chined hull form giving the boat improved high speed capability and control even at high heel angles and is expected to make a good account of herself on the racetrack.

The judging was carried out by some of Europe's top yachting magazines who said it was an easy decision to make regarding such an innovative boat and came to a unanimous decision to award the title to Elan. "The Elan 350 has overtaken all the expectations and we had no doubts about the winner."

The 350, which received its UK debut at the Southampton International Boat Show last year, was up against the First 30, Dehler 32, JPK 1010 and Azuree 40.

Elan also launched its new 'toy' 210 at the show which combines all the features of a larger yacht. The yacht has been met with a lot of enthusiasm with first orders already received.
