By Denise Bréhaut

GMDSS A user's handbook

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) provides a fast and efficient way of calling for assistance at sea, whatever the size of craft or its geographical position. Since it was first published, this book has helped explain the system for anyone using GMDSS and has been excellent pre-course reading for students.

SafaSail HatThe SafaSail Hard Hat looks just like a sailing cap, but will help protect you if you get a bang to the head.  See our review here

Helly Hansen gear for Hannah White

Hannah WhiteOn Sunday 14th June, 26 year old solo sailor, Hannah White, became the first woman and fourth skipper overall to cross the finish line of the 2009 OSTAR (Original Single-handed Trans Atlantic Race). As a sponsored Helly Hansen athlete, Hannah was kept warm, dry and protected throughout the duration of the race with kit provided by the global performance sportswear brand.

The gruelling race saw Hannah crossing the 3,000 nautical miles from Plymouth to Newport, Rhode Island existing on minimal sleep whilst encountering thick fog, stormy seas and strong winds.

Despite the extreme conditions, Hannah was kept warm, dry and in the performance zone thanks to Helly Hansen’s technical apparel.  Hannah was kitted out from top to toe and from the inside out, in a selection of gear from Helly Hansen - designed to the highest standard to meet the unforgiving conditions that professional sailors confront.

Yacht Boots

Yacht BootTHERE was a time when no smart, self-respecting yottie would be seen in the club bar for Sunday lunch without a jauntily parked Breton cap topmark, crisp double-breasted reefer, cravat and pair of Javelin yellow wellies protecting the knife-creased legs of a pair of tan sailing trousers.

Not exactly a practical rig for sailing, but there are still those around today who stuff their bags into their boots, which provide a magnetic attraction for the first dollop of oggin to cream over the sidedeck.

ATIS factsheet from ICOM

Icom M35There has been a lot of interest about the recent developments by OFCOM that allow UK Boatowners to use their marine VHF radios in inland waterways throughout Europe. This has come about because OFCOM are now issuing a Notice of Variation to the current VHF licence allowing UK boatowners to gain an ATIS (Automatic Transmission Identification System) number.

Moerer Weather Infobox

Pocket NavtexRichard Idiens reviews his new pocket NAVTEX.

My old NASA CRT NATEX has done stalwart service for at least two owners of Jonathan-Livingston over twenty years.  I value its input for every voyage, but I am used to it only providing a single frequency, the international English, and only receiving from one or two of the nearest transmitters.  It is getting a bit old and takes up a fair amount of real estate on my radio station table as well as the active antenna mounted on a push pit pole.  Consequently, I got tempted into buying a Moerer Weather Infobox at the Dusseldorf show.
